From the Velocity homepage, if you hover over Status in the top bar, select Earning Status Credits. Scroll down this page and you'll see Virgin Atlantic is listed under the partner airlines section at the bottom of the page.
Thanks SimonD, for your (may be my interpretation) patronising answer. I think you will find that just because an airline is a partner it does not mean every and all routes are codeshared or earn points and/or status credits. For example Airberlin is a Virgin Australia partner but there is only about 6 to 10 routes that earn points and credits.

Does anyone know if Velocity status credits can be earned by flying Virgin Atlantic say HKG-LHR or SFO/LAX - LHR?

Yup, but check the fare class you're booked in. There's a list here: https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/content/Info/StatusEarnFareClass/

I suspect SimonD was merely pointing you in the right direction for information, as Tom-125 has noted it isn't as straight forward.
