I'm planning a trip to Europe with my wife at the end of this year departing BNE, and have a decent amount of QF FF points. Just wondering if I should use them to book the flights through Classic Reward seats or for upgrades? Can you use QF FF points to upgrade on Emirates flights or have to fly QF through SYD/MEL?
I'd recommend booking the flights outright (assuming you have enough for business) as it's guaranteed. In order to get an upgrade you have to buy a higher class ticket, so you may spend an extra $1k & get no upgrade. No you can't upgrade unless it's a Qantas plane.
As hard as it might be buy the class you want to travel and use points for a possible upgrade and then its win win! Never assume on the upgrade as disappointment hurts - and you can only use qantas points on qantas flights for upgrades
