I'm currently 10 status points from becoming a gold member. I'm flying to the UK from Melbourne via Sydney. I'm staying for one night in Sydney.
I will become a gold member once I fly from Melbourne to Sydney. How long does it take to update my FF status? It would be great to use the business class lounge before my flight to the UK!
Qantas flights generally update on the day of flying, so you should be ok, and your status should have updated by the time you checkin for your UK flight.
Just to be careful I would print out a copy of your FF statement and take your boarding pass to the Business Class lounge.
Note you should be able to use the Qantas lounges in SYD and SIN (or HKG if going that way). Coming home BA is known to be difficult at the LHR T3 lounge but there is normally a Qantas rep floating around who should defintely be able to authenticate your status.
If they are unable to authenticate you at the lounge entry, they'll usually (otherwise you can ask) authenticate you manually by calling the Qantas desk or office in London too - I've had it done from the LHR T3 BA lounge where they've called CX to authenticate my new OW status.
