I'm going to become QF platinum soon. Is the new status as valuable as Qantas says it is? I mainly fly business on international and economy in domestic sectors. Just getting existing platinum members feedback.

It is worth it for the first class lounge access alone (if you are in Melbourne or Sydney).
Otherwise you won't see much of a difference, other than the accelerated accumulation of points.
Domestic lounge differential is not a big deal and seat selection difference in minor at best.
The other big difference I should point out is that you do get treated better when travelling internationally in economy (which I typically do on leisure trips). I regularly get offered business level take off drinks, business or PE headphones, and pyjamas on overnight flights. I never received any of these when Gold.

As a Platinum and doing loads of International trips in economy, have never received any such treatment. A greeting at most....

Out of interest do Plat's get much love in domestic economy beyond the standard 'perks' associated with status? I tend to travel domestic between ADL and SYD and I've often seen personalised greetings given to various PAX in economy so I was surprised on a recent flight when the guy next to me who happened to be a Platinum didn't get any verbal acknowledgement (that I saw). Is at least a greeting along with the meal to be expected, or this something that is inconsistent across flights?

The degree of recognition you get probably depends on the nature of the flight - international vs domestic, short vs long flight, loading and workload on cabin crew. On A380 flights I've seen the Customer Service Manager or perhaps CS Supervisor go through the upper deck rear Y cabin and PE cabin systematically consulting their iPad and greeting each high status passenger personally, offering business headphones. On domestic flights it's quite common to be greeted by name and asked if there's anything you want. On transcon flights, with more crew time to spare, I've experienced passengers in the front rows of Y discreetly being offered glasses of business class wine.

I am now a life gold member but was platinum and can say that what I miss most is access to the Sydney international QF first class lounge as the business lounge is woeful. The gold benefits such as priority check in and lounge access are great throughout the whole of the oneworld network so certainly something to aim for.

As a former Platinum One now Gold (less work travel) I agree with other posters re the superiority of Sydney International First Class lounge over Business lounge.
The other thing I notice as a Gold is that other airlines seem to value Qantas Gold more than Qantas does. As a Gold on QF I never ever get recognised on board and of course there's no fast track access at Sydney International (thankly I have an APEC BT card). I was even once told by a QF check-in staff that the problem with Gold is that there are too many!
Contrast that with being a QF Gold travelling on EK or BA for instance where you get the on board recognition, fast track access etc etc.

I regularly fly BNE-CNS-BNE Qantas J. As a gold I never got any special welcome. As a platinum I don't get any better acknowledgement, except I now get access to row 1 a few days out on seat selection.
I requested a few domestic J reward fares to be released (as apparently as a platinum you can get get reward seats released if you are lucky) but got declined.
I have tried requesting to flying forward on earlier flights as a platinum (out of Cairns - this is a published no-cost P1 benefit) but was always told there was a fare difference payable, so overall, for me flying in domestic J, no extra benefit.

On a flight to LHR in J I was asked if I wanted any of the extra wines only available on the first class wine list. Totally depends on the mood of the crew I think. I've had much better welcomes and interactions with the crew as a Gold FF than some of the times as a Platinum.
