My wife and I intend to travel to Europe in June-July 2018. We will have in excess of 350-400k Qantas Frequent Flyer points.

My question is: Flying out of Brisbane to Hamburg return, what would be my option/s as to how best to utilise them?

Hi, a few points to get you started:
- what class of travel are you after
- which routing do you want to use to get to Europe - Asia or Middle East
- are you comfortable booking separate legs - more points expense but better availability.

cheers

Thanks for the reply j30max. We're happy enough to turn right on the plane but would prefer premium economy, Asia is preferable, and am happy to book seperate legs if I have to. I suppose what I'm after is a site that can assist me with my queries. We normally travel to Europe with Emirates out of Brisbane, no Premium Economy and can't use my points.

Not many options on PE out of BNE. CX via HKG is your best bet. But given only one flight a day out of BNE you'll struggle to find availability. Be prepared to transit in SYD/MEL.

Cathay Pacific has 11 flights a week to Brisbane - the daily service is non-stop and the four-times-weekly service usually detours via Cairns but can still be booked as 'Brisbane-Hong Kong'.

Cant advise on flights and points availability even after all these years its a lottery and you just need to do the hard yards and search, search and search again.

Id encourage you to explore the excellent train service within Germany.  In the good old days when QF flew to Frankfurt Id collect my luggage and head downstairs to the airport station and buy a German rail pass then use it to get on the next train to Berlin.  Only non-Germans can buy these passes. Did this cheaply, easily and without drama for a number of years once Id worked out NOT to advance purchase a cheap Frankfurt - Berlin ticket.  Learnt the hard way when QF was late one day and had to buy a new (and expensive) train ticket at the Frankfurt.

I seem to recall a pleasant Finnair flight from Berlin via Osaka and Helsinki with a train  from Osaka to Tokyo to connect with QF back to Sydney.  Hopefully Finnair don't fly single (tail) engine Mac Dougs any more....

A mate just flew Finnair return in J to Europe via Hong Kong and raved about it.  Especially the price.

In summary have a look at a variety of carriers and cities and in Germany for your arrival and departure with connects to Hamburg via train.  www.bahn.de is an excellent resource for train timetables in Germany (and Europe).

I know. I never really considered that as a BNE-HKG flight cuz the timing to transit in CNS is quite bad especially on the return CX103 arrives in CNS at 04:00 which isn't very nice for a red eye. This one has a lot more award availability. But cuz if the transit I feel you might as well transit in SYD/MEL. I guess you have the advantage of checking your bag through via CNS otherwise I prefer to have a proper sleep via SYD/MEL

Is QF61 BNE - NRT with a JAL connection an option?

QF61 doesn't offer PE.
