amex explorer ($395 annual fee that can be largely offset by $400 AMEX travel credit). a very handy card with great benefits. Points can be transferred to hotel programs or frequent flyer programs. Point earn rate,is among the highest.

If you don't wanna pay $395 there is a cheaper version $195 Platnum Edge that also has MR program that transfer to Hilton and SPG at the same rate. The earn rate is 3 points per dollar (ppd) for supermarkets, 2 ppd for fuels and 1ppd for everything else.
Depending on your spending habit you can work out which card works better for you. Both have current promo which you can check directly on their website as I'm not suppose to promote any products here.
Michael: No issue at all with you mentioning sign-up offers or earn rates on credit cards - the issue flagged above was that posting or offering to post 'referral links' which have a personal benefit for the referrer aren't allowed here under our comment policy, or indeed, by AMEX's own T&Cs.
(Under that same policy, I'm not allowed to post any of my own 'referral links' or codes here either, in the interest of keeping things fair for all.)
On top of all the cards mentioned here, there is also the David Jones Amex, with the same transfer rate, ie 1:0.5, but a much poorer earn rate than cards mentioned above.
However, there is currently a 30,000 MR point sign-up bonus (after meeting the spend criteria ofcourse), which translates to 15,000 SPG points. To top it all, it comes with a $99 annual fee only. To put cherry on the cake, existing Amex Card holders are also eligible for the sign-up bonus.

Yes, AMEX Explorer can most definitely convert points to Hilton Honors and SPG.
Conversion rate is 1:1 with Hilton and 2:1 with SPG.
(1 AMEX Gateway point = 1 Honors points, or 2 AMEX Gateway points = 1 SPG Starpoint.)
