My wife & I are seriously contemplating Melbourne Aust to Paris France Biz Class on Vietnam Airlines. $3.8 k return each. Cheaper than any of the Chinese airlines & heaps cheaper than Emirates, Etihad, Qantas etc etc. Any constructive comments anyone?

That's a very interesting choice and one I would not have thought of! The Airline Equality website at http://www.airlinequality.com/Forum/vietnam.htm has mixed reviews, there are several from Australians and those for business class rate it 8/10 but much lower for economy, so maybe you will; be fine as long as you're in business class!
Here is one from Airline Equality:
Twice this year I have travelled Vietnam Airlines from Australia to the UK in Business Class. Excellent value for money. The best aircraft are the newer A330-200s, cabins in better shape, and excellent seat recline when compared to the B77-200s, which are looking rather tired. Check in easy, lounges fine, although nothing special, transit procedures in Vietnam well co-ordinated by ground staff. Onboard, service is consistent, catering excellent, wines good, AVOD rather limited. Despite these minor criticisms, I believe that VN offers the best value for money Business Class option from Australia to the UK at present.

The seat on their new A332 appears to be angled-flat, if that's a consideration - but if they're cheap, it'd probably be worth it?

If you're use to economy, and your alternative is economy, then you probably won't be disappointed. If you're use to business, and your alternative is QF or CX business, then you'll notice that its not really in the same class. But since its 1/3 of the price, even if its 1/3 of the quality, it's still reasonable value.

Thanks for your comments.
We have booked MEL-CDG via Saigon, and return London-MEL (again via Saigon but with a 11 hour layover which we will catch a taxi into SGN city (have a visa)) Business Class for AUD $3,950 per person return.
Can't be any worse than our QF bus class flight from MEL-HKG return recently!!!
