Jetstar are starting evening service from Adelaide nonstop to Hobart in November. Should extend it thru to Auckland providing a much needed link between Tasmania and New Zealand. Would also provide another easy option from Adelaide which avoids changing planes and terminals! Aircraft will only be sitting on ground in hobart so why not try it! What do people think?
I highly doubt load factors would support this. I'm not even sure the Adelaide Hobart route will last. It has been tried a few times and ultimately canned each time. It's just too much plane at 180seats
Not a bad idea IMHO for a tourist route from ADL via HBA to NZ. I bet Air New Zealand charge premium fares for the direct ADL-AKL services. However the Jetstar aircraft won't otherwise sit on the ground in HBA. The Jetstar timetable shows that the aircraft for this Mon-Thu-Sat service will originate in MEL and return to MEL that evening after doing the HBA-ADL-HBA sectors.
How many passengers are they going to carry on a Hobart to Melbourne flight leaving at 10.35 on a Saturday night! Particularly as there is a flight at 8.40pm. Looks like a positioning flight to me. Try hobart - auckland and back once a week and see how it goes
JQ couldn't maintain AKL ADL direct nor MEL WLG, 2 larger markets. I sadly don't think it would work.
Given AKL-ADL has had an NZ service for a long time, and MEL-WLG is served almost double daily, they were going to always struggle. HBA-AKL on the other hand has no competition. Perfect for either JQ or NZ to offer a three weekly service.

Well given that JQ714 has been leaving HBA for MEL at 10:30pm using an A321 for at least the past three years, and when these new ADL services are going the A321 is moving to a couple of hours earlier yet they are retaining the A320 from the ADL service there must be a decent number of pax ex HBA in the carried in the evenings. This 10:35pm service is simply replacing the existing 10:30pm A321 service. No positioning flight.
I highly doubt load factors would support this. I'm not even sure the Adelaide Hobart route will last. It has been tried a few times and ultimately canned each time. It's just too much plane at 180seats
A thrice weekly service similar to this where the aircraft goes MEL-HBA-AKL-HBA-MEL could work, but an NZ thrice weekly would be better as it would capture the growing international market into Tasmania especially from North and South America.
The ADL-HBA service will do just fine, 180 seats was too much plane when they did it daily and with competition, it did well with the 717 when they first tried it, and VA did well with the 73G. TT never had a hope when they tried as they had no trust after all the issues with schedule on the MEL-HBA sectors.
Now there is no competition and 5% of domestic visitors to Tasmania come from SA. Should do well.

Air NZ already fly ADL-AKL daily direct. Will be introducing 787-9 on some flights from October 2017.

If they won't start a CBR-NZ flight, they aren't going to do a HBA-NZ flight with fewer people in the HBA area then in the CBR area.
