Hello ausbt community,

Me and my family are planning a trip to Hong Kong sometime in 2018, and we're not sure who to fly with. I've done some research, to see the prices of the flights, but we can't decide. The three airlines we're looking at are Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Singapore Airlines.

  • With VA, I do need to stop in Melbourne first, but we get to fly in "The Business" and I can earn some Velocity Miles. It's around $11000 for the three of us.
  • With Qantas, I need to stop in Sydney, or Singapore then fly with Cathay Pacific, but I get to fly on the 747 before they're replaced by the 787, and fly on the Business Suite to Sydney. Oh, and earn some QFF points. It's around $14000 for us three.
  • With Singapore Airlines, I need to stop in Singapore, which if we do, we'll be staying for a couple days, but we get the choice of flying on the A350 or A380 on the SIN-HKG flight, both aircraft none of us have been on. The price is $12400.

I left out the direct Cathay Pacific flights on purpose, because even though the seats are, nice, and they're flying the A350 to Perth daily soon, it's almost $18000 for three people in return.

Which airline do you think we should fly with?

Poll: Which airline to fly with to HKG?

VAs 'The Business' is really good. Singapore's fully-flat business is really good (but check the plane, some routes are 777-200s and are old and not so good). Not sure I'd choose a 747... but up to you.

With 2 (or 3, if you like 747s) equally good options, I'd take the direct and slightly cheaper one.

Singapore if you're not flying out of Melbourne. Enjoy a nice layover in the butterfly garden and the pool. Quality well above what I've heard reported for QF, and from what I've read as being pretty close to On Par with VA, which I read David's review on a while ago.

Plus, SQ will give you more points you can redeem elsewhere, whereas VA are pretty niche on that area.

Have you checked the aircraft types and seats?  SQ J seating out of Perth is generally inferior to your other options.  Also, VA runs some 737s to Melbourne, not good for an overnight.

While CX is more expensive, they do have consistently good J seats out of Perth.  You might pick up a special.  They seem to be between sales at the moment.

I have checked the aircraft types on all the routes. I flew with SIA in Business from Perth to Singapore last April. Even though it's 2-2-2, it's still nice.

If we fly with VA, we won't be flying on a 737 if it's overnight.

FWIW if I were you and I wasn't a regular flyer, just get the cheapest fare that meets your needs and available times. Searching for the best deals with too many variables can be a little futile sometimes. Enjoy your trip.

I will choose Singapore Airlines, because it earns the most status credits with the stop in Singapore, also their A350 and A380 products are better than VA's "The Business", so I think that'd be more comfortable in that way.
