I’ve just returned from a trip to Asia where I had 7 flights
with Malaysia Airlines. On three of the flights I could smell cigarette smoke
and on one of the flights the smell was so strong that there was no doubt
someone was smoking onboard. The flight was from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu
on a 737. The only explanation is that someone was smoking in the toilets or
the pilots were smoking. I think it is unlikely that someone was smoking in the
rear toilets because I was at the front of the plane and the smell was too
strong to have travelled all the way from the back. And I don’t think someone
was smoking in the front toilets as I had full view of the toilet and didn’t
see anyone using the toilet before or while I could smell the smoke. Therefore
I am convinced the pilots were smoking. This is something I find so repugnant and
unacceptable and I want to make a complaint to Malaysia Airlines (not for
compensation, but because I want to make sure they are aware that this sort of
thing is happening and that their customers notice and disapprove). I’ve read
that it is not unusual for pilots to smoke on Chinese airlines, but I thought
it was particularly strange for Malaysia. Has anyone else had similar
experiences? Or does anyone have suggestions on the best way to provide
feedback to Malaysia Airlines?
More than likely it was the pilots smoking during the flight. In China it is a lot more common. Although the airlines will have policy's forbidding it. It will be rarely enforced in a lot of Asian companies.
I heard of a incident when the cigarette/ash dropped onto some flight documents and started a small fire in the cockpit. It was put out quickly. Luckily this happened on the ground.
But it must be bad if you could smell it from your seat.
I am sure MA would investigate your complaint, but be surprised if anything changes.
