Hi, has anyone else noticed that the standard flight tracking data / moving map has 'fallen off' Qantas' 747 IFE?
It happened around 5 weeks ago. I flew a 747 (Lord Howe) to HKG on the Monday and it was there and the same aircraft back to Sydney on the Friday and it wasn't...yesterday I flew on 747 'Hamilton Island' on the same route and it wasn't there either.
Not sure if anyone else has picked up on this??
I'm thinking it must have 'disappeared' as part of a firmware update or similar..or perhaps someone at head office forgot to renew their subscription !
They shouldn't have any problem with 747-400ER flight tracker since Qantas 737 and A330 use the same Panasonic eX2 with Rockwell Collins Airshow, and there's no problem with 737 and A330.
You've said flight map unavailable, that could be problem of 747-400 with first (sold as business) class. Since these metal going to Californian Desert (aka retirement) soon, Qantas didn't bother to refresh the cabin, including IFE.
Hi Bt Aus . The lack of data / moving map impacted all PE (where I was ) and Economy seats on both the aircraft I referenced. (nor sure about business class)
I spoke to a crew member who assured me I hadn't missed it as she had one other passenger mention it to her on that flight too.
Interestingly the very small icon 'time remaining' with an hour and minute countdown still works but that's it. My bet is someone has updated the firmware and it literally 'fell off' . Maybe @Chris could drop QF a line and get an explanation. Im sure there is a simple one.
From the aircraft 'names' mentioned, these flights were on VH-OJS and VH-OJU, 2 of the 3 747s getting retired mid-late next year by the 2nd batch of 787s.
On the United App, they block the "where is this aircraft now" when you are flying using their wifi. I always thought it was for security reasons (cause I can't come up with something better!)
I flew at the end of July and beginning of August and it was the same problem - OEH one way, OJU back, so it has nothing to do with the older 747s. The fact it is the same on the 737s adds weight. Ironically I flew OJM in July and it still had the classic flight map - and it was the most entertaining channel on the IFE.
I was very annoyed by it to the point I even emailed Customer Care with no response. Knowing the time left is useful but the in flight map showed time from departure, how long to go, where you were (I wanted to figure out what lagoon over the Pacific I was flying and where it was close to but no IFE map to help). I think more customers need to complain to the crew and other channels - they probably think passengers don't care but they do. QF is not a low cost carrier but no flight map makes it look like it is low cost.
Agree VHOEJ the first crew member I spoke to said she would 'write it up' but I'm not sure if that happened.
I think it's down to the intrepid ABT founder @ ChrisCH to drop his contacts at QF a note on this...I'm sure they would have made a conscious decision to drop it and I for one would like it back ! It's bad enough not having wifi on long haul but this is the perfect screen to accompany a glass o red and a good book..
And it's back...Hamilton Island flew the QF128 HKG to Syd last week and mysteriously the 'flight details' tab has reappeared ...now if we can just work on that wifi for long haul travellers..

Same thing on QF25 last night. Just the "time to run" at the top left hand side.
