Hello,

This has probably been discussed prior and i think i know the answer but here goes.
I have found 3 seats in business across the pond with AA.  We are coming home from JFK however, and need to get to LAX.  AA has no availability from JFK-LAX on the day we need to leave, but QF has 4x Business seats on QF12.  I am pretty sure i cant do a one world redemption via AsiaMiles going on QF12 connecting to AA metal to SYD?  Tell me im wrong!

Officially the answer is no. In order to book any seat on QF12 it must be done in conjunction with any other Qantas numbered flight on the same booking.

Award seats are a bit different and I think it's even harder to book a reward seat on QF12 unless you are also booking a flight between the US and Australia at the same time. You could always ask (by calling) AsiaMiles and see if they'll let you book it because you've already got the flight to Australia but I don't think they'll be able to help as the flight QF12 has strict ticketing conditions and you won't have the flight from the US back to Australia on the same ticket.

I think you will find that Qantas doesn't have domestic travel rights and JFK-LAX needs to be sold on a single ticket with the outbound journey to AU. Hence, no ability to get JFK-LAX only with Asiamiles.

i'm booking a JFK-SYD with asia miles - its just that the JFK-LAX on qantas, and LAX-SYD on AA.

Makes no sense really when LAX-SYD on AA connecting to a SYD-ADL on Qantas would be 100% ok!

It should be ok if you're booking it all with Asia Miles you might just have to call up to get them to book it for you.

It doesn't just have to be with an outbound journey to Australia.

The LAX-JFK (and return flight) can be booked provided there is a least one other Qantas operated flight in the same booking. Just last month I was able to find a price for JFK-LAX on QF12 and then SYD-BNE on QF in the same booking with no flight between Australia and the US needed. The price did work out at a little over $1000 for the two flights which in reality prices the oneway JFK-LAX flight at around AU$800 in Economy.

thanks for your input.  its strange that qantas can sell this as a FF redemption, without any international legs to it, just not for cash.

Book JFK-LAX on Qantas is not possible at all. AA, BA or even Alaska don't show any award availability on QF, and AA generally don't have any award availability on transcon A321T.

If you need a trip from JFK to LAX:
1. Try jetBlue Mint A321 on cash (cheaper and more comfortable than AA/United/Delta)
2. If you have plenty of Star Alliance miles (transferrable from Velocity or credit card), redeem them for United Polaris or Air Canada business class.
3. If you have plenty of SkyTeam miles, redeem them for transcon Delta One.
4. If you have plenty of Alaska miles, redeem them for Virgin America first class or Cathay Pacific first/business class to YVR (can be redeemed with any oneworld miles as well)
