I am travelling to Denpasar on Qantas in the next few weeks and have to transfer through Sydney for 2 hours.
With my American Express card I get access to the Amex lounge in Sydney however I also get access to the Qantas International Business Lounge with my Qantas Club Membership.
Which is better to spend my time in before a hideous 6 hour 737 service to Indonesia?
The Amex lounge is nice, however it is officially tiny. Last time I tried to go there i couldn't even get a seat. It also becomes quite loud because there was so many people in such a small space.
I personally would go to the Qantas International Business lounge any day over the AMEX lounge.
I did the same earlier this year - went to the Amex Lounge on the way to Bali because like you I had access via a card and regretted not going to the QF lounge instead.
Its small, I personally didn't love the food options and it has a very limited view. It's not terrible, but the QF lounge is better IMO.
The toilets in the AMEX lounge are strange, like you might expect in a park. Otherwise, the AMEX lounge is nice but as others have mentioned, it's tiny. If you can access the Qantas lounge, that's where I'd go, and save your passes for if you're traveling on an flight with no other lounge options.
Is the skyteam downstairs lounge part of the same amex lounge since they are both managed by plaza premium or is it just that small area on the one level? If its just the small area I would go to the QF lounge.
I am in a similar situation flying out of Sydney Int'l (not my home airport). Sounds like QF lounge over AMEX. What about the Emirates lounge? Flying QF business late morning I should have access to that too right? Is that better than the QF lounge?
I went into the Amex lounge recently mainly just to have a look, it is small and was quite crowded. I got in the lift there and went down to the Star Alliance lounge? here it's much more spacious,I'm not sure if you are allowed to enter that way, but happy to stick with the Qantas Lounge
Any AMEX Centurion Lounge in the world is overcrowded because US version of Platinum Card, all cardholders (including the authorized user) can bring 2 guests in for free, and first 3 authorized user only costs cardholder an extra US$175 from US$550 annual fee.
AMEX longe is good if you get there early but as others have said it is only small and get crowed. The advantage of the AMEX over the star alliance is that the AMEX has better coffee but the star alliance has more room. Qantas lounge can also get full - go between both - it fills in the time
Pick the EK Emirates lounge at SYDint if you have access.
Its the better than the QFi SYD J lounge.
But if you don't get access to the EK SYDint lounge, the QFi SYD J lounge is ok.
Can't say anything about the AMEX lounge, as I have no access, but have used the EK SYDint several times. As a SG, I have QFi SYD J lounge is bearable. Not great, but bearable for a few hours.
the EK lounge is way better (food AND wine/real champers) than QF lounge which gets pretty crowded in the mornings, even though large. I used it on AKL flights on EK/QF ticket until they canned the AKL flight grrr. BUT as EK only now have flight to Chch, the lounge now gets shuttered early - about 8am? - after Chch flight has gone as I found out a couple of months ago. Presume it opens later in the day/afternoon for evening flights to Dubai/BKK etc.
