Never had an issue as a VA Platinum anywhere is the US when showing card and boarding pass. Domestic or international - I can recall JFK, LGA, EWR, BOS, ORD, DTW, DEN, SFO and LAX being no issue
Despite having Platinum VA status, the last time I was in the US the Delta staff would only let me into their lounges (at several different airports) after I showed them an onward flight itinerary back to Australia with Virgin Aus/Delta. They were particularly pedantic in Atlanta, their hub. They weren't bothered that the return leg was on a different day though.
Beside each Delta lounge it says: Delta Air Lines operated flights (not available on domestic only itineraries)
Never seen that before nor have I ever been denied access on a Delta domestic only sector and I've done a few.
Based on your comments above, it appears that providing you can show your itinerary with a return to Australia on VA/DL, you are all good. Nonetheless, it is a confusing choice of words IMHO - one could interpret that as any domestic flight. And its the interpretation that we will find ourselves battling over with some Delta rep at the lounge entrance....

It's actually an interesting choice of words now appearing on the Virgin website (https://www.virginaustralia.com/au/en/experience/at-the-airport/international-lounge-access/)
