Hey guys, just a curious thought that has been festering for a while now. Does anyone know if you can book/fly commercially on the "Alliance" livery planes? Eg. Oneworld, Skyteam or Star Alliance branded planes/flights.
And if you can book/fly these - how do you identify when booking if the flight you're on is on one of these planes? Or is it pot luck?
Whilst they're branded with an alliance livery the aircraft inside and the operator is just one of the member airlines and once inside the aircraft there is nothing that's different to say normal livery aircraft.
Generally they're painted in an alliance livery to celebrate something in particular eg. Qatar Airways painted two 777's in a one-world livery when they joined the alliance in 2013.
As for booking these flights well it is just pot luck but you can do things to boost your chances. It'd be wise to check if the operating airline actually has some aircraft of the scheduled aircraft type even painted in a special alliance based livery (eg. Qantas doesn't have any 737's in a oneworld livery but they do have two A330's and a 747 and all three have somewhat predictable routes based on previous flight history).
Finally, Here are some numbers for you (from FlightRadar24's article "Tracking Star Alliance, SkyTeam, and Oneworld Special Liveries" and Wikipedia)
106 aircraft are painted in a Star Alliance livery (3787 aircraft in the entire alliance)
68 aircraft are painted in a SkyTeam livery (3054 aircraft in the entire alliance)
and
55 aircraft are painted in a Oneworld livery (2720 aircraft in the entire alliance)
Are you trying to fly on an aircraft operated by an airline but carrying the livery of the airline's alliance (e.g. VH-EBV, a Qantas A330-200 carrying the Oneworld livery) or are you trying to fly on an aircraft operated directly by the alliance? If it's the former, it's very hard to predict which aircraft you'll actually get, so it's all down to luck; if it's the latter, you can't.
Thanks guys for your response, just what i thought - bit of pot luck. As an aviation enthusiast - hopefully i'll get a chance to fly one of those soon as just another thing to tick off lol.
A slightly different angle to your initial query. Do you collect aircraft models?
I make it a point to get a model of the exact aircraft of the airline that have flown in. These days it's easier to get it on the flight when in stock, or order online from the airline website. And if it's a special livery then it will have to be sort on the web (most of the time).
To date I'm still missing some aircraft of my younger years (still looking), but am glad that I do have the first airline plane that I flew in.
