I noticed that the recent "sale" ended the day the double status points started. I'm looking for London Heathrow to Sydney return (I live in London) in Business, and it's around $10K AUD, even when looking at many different dates in different months. Unbelievable.

good point, but not just school holidays, it is also peak tourism season in Europe because it's the middle of summer.

No penalty if on a QF fare, though the double status offer is only available on QF metal.

If you are an AMEX Platinum (or Centurion) cardholder, I was able to book a flight last night, SYD-LHR, (QF1 and QF2 return) for $7600, flying in July '18. This is by calling the Platinum concierge.

Via SG for sure. Going via Perth feels like bad trigonometry!

For me, Definitely Singapore. This will become an even more obvious choice once all A380's are upgraded to the new business class seats.

I'm heading off to the UK in April 2019 and will be flying J. I thought the flight from PER/LHR would be the go (as I have rellies in Perth) but prices at the moment are quite high. The Singapore route might be a much cheaper option overall but it would have to be a better seat than what Qantas have on their 380s.

In my experience airfares from Australia to Europe tend to be more expensive than the other way around. Someone with more knowledge of economics than me will know why, perhaps the level of competition? I'm a short hop from Oslo and regularly buy business class fares from Oslo to east-coast Australia (ex-EU) for around $2,000-2,500pp using OneWorld alliance airlines. You need to plan ahead and no changes/refunds are allowed obviously. But my parents took advantage of the recent QF sale and paid well over $5,000pp for exactly the same flights in reverse.
