Is Virgin Lounge membership ever likely to match QC for international lounge access? As I see it Virgin lounge membership is poor value if you travel mostly international with lowly tier status.

my travel is everywhere but NZ - card is therefore useless except for the Aus departure. J class not an option, so QF and QC it remains

Unless Virgin joins a global alliance (which is unlikely in my view as they pickup relationships from both skyteam and star) at the momen.
I think lounge access will remain limited to Virgin's closest partners - Etihad, Singapore, AirNZ, Delta, Virgin Atlantic, Virgin America and probably in the future someone in China/ HK

Sorry Gazzman, there always is priority pass if you often bounce around airlines and your tier status is not giving you entry to that airlines lounge.
Im just a lucky VA lounge member that travels trans tasmin and business class on VA to the states. Suites me just fine.

When flying with Virgin Australia or its partners, you usually get access to their lounges. Just by flashing a Velocity Gold or Platinum card, they usually let you in... works for me on Singapore Airline flights, even when I didn't book on Virgin!
