The reasoning makes sense for the airlines, it just means that the pax in Y in particular have to suffer the consequences. I'll take the daytime SQ flights SIN-SYD over the overnight QF flights, even as a QFP. Much prefer my own or a hotel bed for a proper nights sleep over what sleep may be possible in Y overnight
We live in Shepparton (about 2 hours from Melbourne airport). I always look for daytime flights as the drive home after missing a nights sleep is too much and we wake up refreshed after staying in a hotel whereas it's too early to stay in a hotel following a sleepless overnight flight.
The other issue is connections. I use Hong Kong to go elsewhere in Asia and I can connect within three hours going but have to wait a day for connections coming back. But a faster connection coming back would miss the Sydney connection to home so an overnigh in Sydney. Either way it won’t work well, so a mid morning flight going and a night flight back is the best I can hope for with a day bed at Hong Kong.
I'd like a day flight because I can't usually check into a hotel before 2pm and I don't want to arrive at any time and then have a 6 hour journey home, after a 24 hour flight. Anyway, there are only 3 trips a day from Melbourne, at 7.20am, 1.30pm and 6.40pm.
Living in Asia, its great to fly overnight. You can finish your day here, sleep on the plane and enjoy a full day back in Aus. Particularly for the short trips home it works great - but either way you then lose it on the other end with a day flight back to Asia.
If the Asia to Aus flights were day time, the Aus to Asia flights would be overnight as airlines won't want to have a plane sitting on the ground all night at either end. Depending on your travel plans its probably 6 in one, half a dozen the other.
For what its worth I was told that its all about cost and that a night flight into Aus is actually far cheaper in landing fees etc for the airlines and that SQ/CX pay and pay dearly to have the day flight. I don't know if what I was told is accurate.
I think it’s actually more to do with airline schedules for the Australia-based airlines.
In order to offer a day flight from Asia to Australia, the outward flight from Australia would need to be a night flight in order to minimise the fees associated with leaving an aircraft parked at the airport all day.
At the moment, the flights leave Australia in the morning and arrive in the Asian cities late afternoon. They then can turn the planes round straight away and fly back to Australia by the morning.
It would be totally uneconomical to leave the planes sitting on the tarmac from late afternoon until the morning of the next day.
There is no reason a plane cannot leave Australia in the evening, arrive in Asia in the morning and immediately turn around and fly back to Australia during the day.
Ive often wondered about this with QF and think that if things dont go well with PER-LHR longer term, we may see this become a reality.
I would love to see PER prosper for QF, but if not a full move back could work.
QF9 could move to an overnight flight ex MEL with a day trip to LHR. On the return QF10 would do a midday departure ex LHR with a morning SIN arrival and then a day flight onto MEL. Similar to how the old LHR schedules worked through DXB.
The current extra A380 capacity on SIN seems to be too much (almost tripled previous capacity) and would support this kind of action.
off the topic a little i kind of remember the days of the old BA11 INTO PERTH which started in LONDON AND WENT VIA SINGAPORE,I sadly never got to go on it as such but that service for WA was one of the few one could get ex ASIA to the West Coast of Australia and gave the Adelaide people a same day connection with QF onwards with the last flight of the day.that lasted from 1997 to 2000.these days except for seasonal singapore airlines nonstop daytime flights sin-adl we do not get a daytime flight.i went to ask about that option coming home from europe for this year, sorry non exist.forced to choose between a sixteen hour transit in singapore on the way home or using an alternative carrier(qatar airways)i chose the latter.
I think the aus airlines to Sydney want to get around the curfew black out time by flying during it.They land in the morning then the plane can fly elsewhere.
As a VA FF I try to fly SQ internationally and so luckily for me there are 2 flights a day heading back to SYD, and will be 3 a day once SQ288 kicks in next week. The flights leave at around 7am, 9.30am and 10.30am.
QF used to have a day flight from Hong Kong to SYD but now it is only CX, leaves 9am gets into SYD around 8pm. Means that we have to fly CX up and back if we want to do the day flight (which we like to do). Was on the CX flight just yesterday and it was full, as I do the trip often, it is a popular flight and I really wish QF would bring back the day flight option. I sometimes go on their late o/night flight and it never seems that full. hint hint......

As already pointed out, for those of us stuck at the back of the bus day flights are a godsend.

Flying into SYD and landing at 6 AM is torture with immigration queues. Would be nice if they were staggered a bit.
