I was planning to put in a points upgrade request for an upcoming international flights with qantas, but just received an email asking whether I would like to make a points/cash offer to upgrade. I’ve had a pretty good hit rate with points upgrade requests in the past but never tried the bid upgrade system (in fact, I’ve never received an invitation to bid for an upgrade on an international flight before). Wondering which path the ausbt community have found to be most successful?
It looks like the premium economy cabin I booked in is oversold (or at least fully sold) based on expert flyer, so should be a reasonable chance of a boost to business class.
A bid upgrade by definition is more successful depending on the price you wish to pay/can afford, and the minimum price they are suggesting. If possible first get a sense of what people are prepared to pay, from blogs etc..
Would be interesting if the OP could do both and let's hypothetically say that the bid now upgrade came through. we can then take a class action against QF for breaching their own TC.
On another note, this is a good indication that award upgrade is promising for the OP.

I was tempted to try both options and see which came through, if any.

I would do the one you’d rather do, ie would you prefer to do it on points or contribute a bit of cash?

Most other FF forums agree that Classic Upgrade Awards are filled before looking at the bid system.
