I'm flying SQ from PER to HKG. I'll have carry-on only and travelling on an Australian passport. I've read the SQ webpage about online check-in and see that PER is on the list of places that accept self-printed boarding passes, but there's also the caveat that you can proceed straight to immigration only "if you don’t require travel document/visa/credit card verification at the check-in counter". Given the above info about me and my travel, is it possible to say if this applies to me or not? What else would you need to know to make the call?
For Outbound SQ Online Check in is mainly for seat selection and to use the "quicker" internet check-in queue at the airport if you have no airline status.
If you check-in online it will put on the ticket something like "IDENTIFICATION CHECK REQUIRED" which means you have to go to the check in counter anyway.
If you have Gold Status with Virgin Australia you want the printed ticket anyway so it will put "Partner Priority" on the ticket.
Coming back to Perth / Australia if you have no partner status Online Check-In will be work for you and with no check-in bags no need to visit a counter. Though if you wanted "Partner Priority" printed, it's a counter visit.
Hi again bagpuss. So, just in case you're interested, this is what happened; on the back of getting an email from SingAir saying I could indeed skip check-in, I was all set to try my luck and head straight to immigration, but there was no line at the J counter so I chickened out and went up to talk to the friendly folk there. They said, yes, I sorta theoretically could have skipped them, but they would have then paged me, to check my ID before boarding. Alternatively, I could have had my ID checked at the lounge and the staff there would have notified the check-in staff. So, in summary, you can't really just go straight to boarding. Someone from SQ check-in needs to see your ID before you get on the plane. But the option to do it at lounge reception seems like a good one.
