If you don’t have a full Chinese visa, it’s probably not worth trying. I used to live in Dongguan and public transport was always checked by officials when entering/leaving Shenzhen. Private transport was never checked to my recollection, but doesn't mean it never is.
Every possibility that this has changed in the last couple of years.
You'll need to use your passport to book HSR or even intercity bus, so I wouldn't risk it as i suspect it all goes to a central database somewhere.
That said I've never actually seen rail staff checking visa conditions, hotels do, they simply punch in the passport number which appears on ticket, and cursory check that it matches by security

Currently in China and I can tell you that public transport infrastructure is so heavily policed I would not chance it.
