I am travelling from BKK-AMM in Economy. I am a Qantas Gold FF (OneWorld Sapphire). Does anyone have experience in getting upgraded based on status or just buying an upgrade for a reasonable fee on RJ flights?
I think a status-based upgrade on RJ is unlikely due to the prickly financial situation they're in, nor have I ever heard of them handing out free upgrades.
Paying for an upgrade is your best bet, though I'd try to arrange that before you arrive at the airport. Check-in staff at the airport will be contracted and while they will try to help, their knowledge of RJ processes (beyond check in) will be limited.
If you haven't yet booked your flight or have a refundable fare, I'd actually try to route via Colombo flying TG, CX or UL for BKK-CMB. One-way business fares for CMB-AMM (which is about 7hrs) on RJ are around $650 (or at least they were for me this time last year). This will be a bit cheaper than a business fare for BKK-AMM. However, you won't get an amenity kit as they don't hand them out except for their longest routes (such as Bangkok, Chicago, New York).
I agree on the chances of status based upgrades, mainly because you do not hold status with RJ but rather with QF. I once bought an upgrade at checkin a BKK for the short hop to HKG, so the check in staff should be able to accommodate you. I believe the premium I had to pay was around half of the difference between eco and biz class ticketed fare.

If you bought one, how much was it?
Thanks!
