You haven't said which airline but as you've put it in Qantas/Jetstar area and Jetstar are the only direct carrier I'll assume you're flying with Jetstar.
Around 6-12 months ago Jetstar made getting upgrade quite hard. They used to send out emails offering cheap upgrades around 72 hours prior to departure if there were still seats left.
This has all stopped and as a result, the only way to upgrade is by doing a full fare change (including change fees) and the difference to the business class cabin. This applies both over the phone and on the day of travel at the airport which makes it very expensive now to upgrade to Jetstar business. By using this new method often it'll be more expensive to buy Economy and then pay to upgrade to business then it would have been to just buy Business class in the first place.
Occasionally if the flight is oversold in Economy they'll ring select people before the flight to offer upgrades however in February this is quite unlikely and I wouldn't bank on this.
If you are flying via Sydney on Qantas then please say which fare class (Y, L, K etc) you're booked in as this effects which upgrade options are possible and for how much.
Getting an upgrade to/from HNL is hard. I haven't done that with Hawaiian but they do have the option to do this through plusgrade bidding system.
QF flight is difficult to get upgrades, even worse reward tickets. We tried scoring J flights for our leg back for our honeymoon and weren't successful.
Wanting to fly with Qantas via Sydney. Will be booking tonight.
I assume Y L K is Sale, Saver and Flex? In which case it will be Saver.
Kind of...
On Qantas international flights
E, N, O,Q is Sale
G, K, L, M, S, V is Saver
B, H, Y is Flex
When upgrading with points the number of points is depdent on which fare class booked. The clearing order is based on QF status at the time (Bronze last at the pecking order). Hawaii is often a tricky route to upgrade so I wouldn't bet on it.
Anything booked in the Saver category will set you back 60,000 points to upgrade. The Flex caterogy will only set you back 33,000 points to upgrade.

Ahk Well I'll book and put in a request I guess. I have a stack of points so maybe they'll see that and want me to use them
