I recall reading on here a couple of months ago that you can book reward flights as one ticket with both carriers. I've just called VA twice today and both times were told that the SYD - HKG flights with VA are one ticket and the Virgin Atlantic HKG - LHR are another ticket, so costing more points.
Has anyone been able to book this route on one ticket?
2. The Points price for a Reward Seat will be based on the total miles for all sectors in a one way journey, except where there is a break in the journey. Where there is a break in the journey, the Points price is calculated on a per sector basis.
A break in the journey includes: (...) when a passenger arrives at an intermediate point and is not scheduled to depart within 24 hours of arrival; (b) a change in class of travel within the journey; or (c) a change in operating airline where the airlines are located in different Reward Seat Points tables
In this case, you are not breaking the journey (your onward flight from Hong Kong departs within 24 hours of your arriving flight), you are not changing the class of travel for your journey, and you are not changing operating carriers between the points tables, so as per VA's own T&Cs, "The Points price for a Reward Seat will be based on the total miles for all sectors in a one way journey", which would be a Table 1, Zone 10 reward.
If they're telling you anything else, they're incorrect and would be in violation of their own T&Cs, which is a legally binding agreement between Velocity and its members (Velocity can't just decide which parts of the rules they'd like to follow and which parts they'd like to ignore). If other readers are also experiencing this problem on a regular basis, please let me know and I'll raise with Virgin Australia HQ, because this shouldn't be happening (especially now that VA is improving its partnership with VS for one-stop flights to London).

that is incorrect, you can get it for the points under the table that applies to the total distance. I'd ask for a supervisor...

To quote VA's own policy on this:
