In theory the A380 can do PER-LHR with a reduced load say 400+pax and much more room for 32"economy or F,J,&Y+@ 38" so all can sleep well.Doubt they'd fill the'plane though and via SIN is easier?

A380 can in theory fly that route with a reduced load, maybe 400+ pax, so easily F,J,&Y+ seating that will make a good comfortable flight for all?
Doubt they can fill the'plane ex PER and its best used with the SIN stopover - actually a slightly shorter distance from MEL and SYD to the EU, with a better load in basic economy.
ChrisCh,apologies wasn't trying to beat the system just thought l didn't hit correct buttons to add it- nextime l be more patient! I'm relatively new here!
Not sure were all you guys are getting your info from but a friend of mine who works for QF says the 9 and 10 are full in J and W on every flight per/lhr/per. Non revs and upgrades hardly ever clear.
As I said it may depend on the day of the week but my upgrade economy to business for a Monday came through more than a day out, but on seat selection business seemed fairly full. So not a story of it being half full nor it being impossible to get an upgrade. Somewhere in between. We shall see what happens on PE coming back next Saturday.
Routesonline.com has just published longest A380 routes, AKL-DXB is only 200 miles shorter LHR-PER 'though may have payload restriction, since doubt it's busy route?
Just by way of an update that Monday flight I referred to above was absolutely full in all classes. I was very lucky to get that upgrade. I will see what happens on the return journey.
The new(er) A380s have weight advantages of up to 10 tonnes compared to the first batch from the previous decade - thus allowing for more payload and/or range. QF waiting for the newer 787s has also given them a ~5 tonne advantage crucial for consistent PER-LHR legs in the northern winter.
In theory we will see the end of seat blocking on DFW-SYD if QF proceed with their indefinitely delayed order of 8 A380s - but that’s a big IF!
its no secret QF are struggling to fill the QF9 and 10 flights, even in J - plenty of availability, given its the euro summer, etc would think it would be full - but you look at the QF1 and 2 via Sing, and you cant get a seat - its not the cost or the plane, its people just don't want to be in a plane for 17 hours, irrespective of the class.....

QF 9 has a very high load factor in premium y and j class, your statement regarding availability is incorrect.

I beg to differ...frequent travellers know better than choosing a 787 over an A380 for such a long trip to LHR regardless of transit or time elapsed. The A380 is vastly superior and I dare say once onboard lounge, J and F are refurbed, the A380 LHR services may kill off QF9/10.

Given that 60% of passengers origate in Perth hard to see how QF1/2 can kill it off. I just did the return Canberra LHR via Perth and it was full each way and a good flight. Checking Sale fares there are more on QF1/2 than 9/10. One less stopover and a small but non crowded lounge in Perth is better than a crowded Singapore one. Given all of this I think a QF Perth hub is here to stay with Paris next year and I am sure Frankfurt’s as well, possibly in 2020..
Personally (well it’s all personally since this is a forum) I prefer QF 9/10 over the Middle Eastern/Singapore stopover - doing both a couple of time albeit it in J was enjoyable.
Qantas operate a Australian crew between Melbourne and London and a British crew between Perth and London - something about it being cheaper.
From a comparison perspective these were the advantages for me - easier transit in Perth - lounge is beautiful and relaxing, 1-2-1 layout in with direct aisle access (easier to use the facilities), better seat than than A380, arrive at Heathrow as one of the first to land and low traffic so wait times basically useless. The bar on the a380 is nice, flowing through Dubai or Singapore I have been delayed and often have to race through To make a connection, a380 is way quieter.
Flying again in September and it was the cheaper option and faster. Happy for everyone else to not fly so I can get them upgrades and sleep for 14 hours

A shame they cant run the 380 per /lhr that would be the silver bullet...the 789 is just too small for this long a flight

Using the dugong is entirely possible (BA use to deploy a 747 with a stopover on the way back).
