Is it me or is the Air Canada Aeroplan -> Altitude program so restrictive and disastrous for earning status miles now that we should just fly Air New Zealand premium economy?

Surely the issue is not which airline you fly on, but which loyalty programme you're a member of?
If you're looking for Star Alliance Gold, whilst flying on Air Canada, how about joining Aegean, for their ultra-cheap 16,000 miles gold-for-life offer? (see http://www.ausbt.com.au/shortcut-to-star-alliance-gold-frequent-flyer-status )
