Where are you flying? If your flight has premium economy you’ll only be able to upgrade to premium, not business. I haven’t used the upgrade bid because I don’t want to find myself successful and in a middle seat.
A friend was telling me he recently did this on a SYD-SIN flight on the way to Maldives - and was successful for himself and his wife. I thought he was originally in Y but could be wrong? He was able to make a bid for business and was prompted with a suggested figure of $750 each. He bid that amount, was successful, and in the end was only charged around $400 each as that must have been enough to be one of the top bidders. He was very pleased.
