I have purchased a domestic BNE-MEL flight in economy which has already been successfully upgraded to business with points. I need to change the departure date to one day later. Will the fare revert back to economy and will I lose all the points used to make the upgrade?
Are you referring to QANTAS or Virgin? For QANTAS, I have done this a number of times by calling the service centre. I have been successful, but there are a couple of provisos. Does your economy ticket allow changes (flex) and at what cost? Is the flight you want to change to at the same cost as the original flight? Are there award seats in business available for that flight (See ABT on guides on how to identify these)? I satisfied all three criteria and was able to change the flight and get the business upgrade shifted at no extra cost. I was platinum QF at the time, so this might have helped.
Best to give them a call - I just went through all their T's & C's, and couldn't find anything directly pertaining to your scenario.
However I do know from experience that Virgin Australia has to remove an upgrade before changing an upgraded flight. I would assume Qantas does the same.
If it's more than 24 hrs before your flight, a successful upgrade can be cancelled for a 5,000 point penalty. If it's within 24 hours of your flight, then the points you used are forfeited. If you have high status with Qantas (generally Platinum or above), then they may be more inclined to waive any penalties.
I am sure it can be done but as mer2001 says Flex fare over Red E deal could cost you, but I think your biggest hurdle will be if the the upgrade options for the the flight you want to change to have already been taken up.

Thanks for the quick responses. It's with Qantas and I have no status. Wanted to ask here instead of waiting on hold for up to an hour.
