Anyone able to tell me if a trip to Haikou (China) is regarded as international short haul or international long haul? I've asked the Q on the Virgin Australia Facebook page and all they do is give me a link to Hainen Airlines.
International short haul: All Virgin Australia flights, departing to/arriving from countries within South East Asia and the Pacific; or crossing the Tasman.
Our international short haul network services destinations such as Christmas and Cocos Islands, New Zealand, Pacific Islands and Denpasar.
*International short haul flights are ordinarily operated or marketed by Virgin Australia International or Virgin Australia (SE Asia).
International long haul: All Virgin Australia international flights departing to/arriving from Hong Kong and Los Angeles, or passing through these ports.
Our international long haul network services regions such as North America, the UAE, Europe and beyond.
*International long haul flights are ordinarily operated or marketed by Virgin Australia International.
Virgin Australia doesn't fly there, so if you're hoping to use your points or Platinum certificates to get a business class upgrade, you won't be able to do that.
"Four complimentary fare upgrades per year from a Freedom fare to a Business Class seat on Domestic, Trans Tasman or International Short Haul flights marketed and operated by Virgin Australia."
So Hainen Airlines, which is marketed by VA, and operating under Hainen (but VA by default) doesn't count?

If you're flying from Australia it's most definitely long haul.
