Points plus pay makes sense if you are less than Gold as the chance of an upgrade is quite low. If you have Platinum it makes no sense at all as an upgrade is much more likely for far fewer points. Also the higher the fare type the more status credits and points awarded. But note there is quite a few points being asked for to cover that additional $300-500 for a more flexible and thus rewarding ticket.
Can anybody confirm this 100%? That is, If you purchase a certain fare ie Mel->Syd Flexible Economy (20 SC) and use a mix of points and cash, you DO receive those SC's?
Reason I ask is that at Anniversary Jul 31 (Taking into account all my current bookings I will be 25 SC's short of Gold (I think)
I am currently at 320 (10 with BA MUC--> LHR) and the rest on QF metal.
I have the following bookings :
MEL-OOL (DE) 15
OOL-SYD(DE) 10
SYD-MEL (DE) 10
MEL-SYD (DE) 10
SYD-CNS (DE) 15
CNS-SYD (DE) 15
SYD-MEL (DE) 10
MEL-SYD (DE) 10
SYD-MEL(DE) 10
MEL-AKL (DB) 80
AKL-MEL (DB) 80
MEL-PER (DE) 20
PER-MEL (DE) 20
______________
305 SC's
______________
305+320 = 625
Loyalty Bonus at 500 = 50
305 + 320 + 50 = 675
Having not attained Gold yet. (I have only over the past 9 months started to become a semi frequent traveller and am only 34)
In this scenario what is the best way of getting the extra 25?
I don't travel unless I need to/want to
But i think a run to get 25 SC's may be in order.
At the same time I have well and truly exhausted my travel budget in terms of paying for flights (for the time being at least, which is why I want to make completely sure that with points + pay you still get SC's)
I guess that is one way to do it. See what my budget situation is then.
Is anyone able to tell me how the "Loyalty Bonus" works?
Ie, as per previous post, I will hit 500 SC's Sometime around the AKL trip.
How does the Loyalty bonus work? Do you get an email straight away as soon as youve hit 500 SC's with QF or JQ? Or does it take a while? Once you choose the 50 SC's, how long does it take before they get credited to your account?
Thanks Jflyer for response but If I need 25 SC's for Gold, wouldn't it make better sense to use points+pay as Patrikk suggested its better for "less than Platinum" to use points plus pay.
You will certainly get the bonus 50 SCs but it is not immediate. It takes a little while to come through. Note the 50 SCs do not come, as far as I can tell, on the bonus SCs on double bonuses or on those accrued on othe One World airlines only those on a QF ticket. This last year For example, had 2100 SCs but did not get four sets of bonuses for this reason.

Thanks for reply again. All but 10 of my 320 SC's have come from QF Metal.
At some point after returning from AKL in early may May I will reach 500+ SC's. All future bookings are with QF.
How long approximately once you hit 500 SC's do the 50 SC's get credited? A week, A month, 90 days?
Anniversary is 31JUL and assuming i get bonus 50 SC's by then I will be 25 SC's short of Gold/700.
By 18th may assuming Bonus 50 SC's get credited I will be on 675.
That is the scenario.
But as you indicated i an earlier post in this thread "Points plus pay makes sense if you are less than Gold as the chance of an upgrade is quite low. So what I am trying to ascertain is....
1. To get those extra 25 SC's to attain Gold in your opinion it would be better to get them in a points + pay scenario AND
2. The time it take for those bonus SC's to hit your account once you hit 500
I would ask the call centre on the finer points of timing, and yes go for points plus pay for the last 25 SCs if the $s are too much, as their marginal value at where you are is quite high.

So you have selected your date/s, fare type and have opted to use points plus pay.

Yes, points plus pay fares are the same as the ones you'd normally buy with cash, so you'll get the same status credits as the fare dictates.

Usually around late Feb / March each year Qantas offer double SC’s, can you not fit another flight in before July 31 using the double SC’s offer?
