Bangkok has some of the worst traffic in the world. If you want to cruise River Chao Phraya its best to stay close to it or on the Sky Train link. You can hire your own long boat at River City wharf and others and see the temples upstream. You can take a night cruise with dining where you coast along the river. This is easily booked via your hotel concierge. If you want to see the Grand Palace and Chinatown just jump on a local commuter ferry boat that will cost around 0.50 cents per person. The Floating Market is best booked through your hotel concierge. Don't get taken in by the local tuk tuk touts who will take you everywhere except where you want to go. Visit the Teak Palace if you have time but it's not on the River.

Sorry, a bit late with this post. We very, very rarely take tours when we travel, but we did this private canal tour in a small teak boat a few years ago and it was great - very glad we made the exception. Family of five. You can tailor the tour eg drop the artist's house and add an extra floating market. Not cheap though.
