This very rarely happens. I've never had it happen to me. With how advanced the computer systems are these days, I don't think it would happen very often. Of course, they reserve the right to take back the extra points, but if you've spent it already, I don't know how they'll get them back.
Got more sign up bonus points than I should have with a new credit card a few years ago, I would say it’s a bank error more than QF because not only were the points more than they should have been but they were deposited before I even used the card and hadn’t met minimum spend yet.
I had the same thing with a credit card. Got the 40000 sign up before the minimum spend, then the 40000 again after and then a random 16000 points. My $199 credit card fee for 96000 points was well worth it. I promptly closed the account and nothing was ever said. I'm sure this was a bank error too.
I reached 2400 SC with QFF and waited a few days but my bonus reward didn’t come through for me to select. So I called QFF and they processed it over the phone and I selected 50K points. A few weeks later I logged into my account and the bonus reward selection came up and I selected 50K points and the system processed the selection. This happened 4 months ago and I still have all the points

Bank error in your favour.. So the Monopoly game does happen in real life!

Wow that a great score. I think some give the Qantas and bank systems too much credit. I think many forget they are all linked to some relic legacy systems.
I've had a couple of occasions where I've had to lodge complaints with QF about missing points due to either missed connections (requiring Original Routing Credit) or other more interesting stuffups, and I have received more than I was owed when the transaction appeared on the QFF statement as if it were a higher fare bucket, with no explicit acknowledgement that they were giving me any bonus points etc as compensation - I suspect it's not an error as such, but rather that staff have some discretion as to how they resolve points crediting issues in certain circumstances, and as a customer I do enjoy being occasionally surprised when they do service recovery properly.
I have received more through Virgin after buying Apple Mac. Received 13000+ pts. A few days after purchase they released a new model so I cancelled the order, then reordered the new model MAC and received another 13000+ pts when the next purchase was made.
Have never had the points reversed. That was years ago now.
I had about $5k of fraudulent transactions go through my credit card. I reported it to the bank and was reimbursed. After they did not reverse the awards points in the following statement period I converted them to frequent flyers. Pity the rate was only 0.5 but better than nothing!

Good old hit and miss Qantas. Why do you bother? Because of mistakes like this?
