Hi folks - I read on a forum (I know, bucket of salt) that Qantas Group is considering moving the Jetstar 787s to Qantas, and then placing an order for A321LR to pick up the 787 routes. I know there would be range issues with most of the 787 routes for Jetstar other than Bali, so it sounds like it could be nonsense, but I'm curious if anyone has inside knowledge / thoughts.

Whether Qantas wants the smaller 787-8, and JQ will need some for Tokyo and Vietnam and possibly Honolulu. QF could make us of A321s though, Adelaide and Canberra to Singapore for starters.

Yes currently there are 14 long haul 787 routes (excluding the charter flights they occasionally do to/from China):
The A321 has a max range of 7600km (in a best case scenario) but currently the longest A321 flight is 6243km from Sydney to Manila. Either way they wouldn't be able to operate Phuket (HKT), Honolulu (HNL), Bangkok (BKK), Gold Coast (OOL) to Tokyo (NRT) and any of the Chinese flights (CGO and the charter flights to WUH)

The idea of northern JQ hubs has resurfaced recently. JQ could easily operate A321LR flights from DRW and CNS to all those destinations bar HNL.

The main reason DRW and CNS are unlikely to be used as hubs for connecting from elsewhere in Australia to the list of destinations currently served by 788s is that the current 788 routes are flown in competition with other airlines. Who's going to go one-stop with JQ on a narrowbody A321 when you can go direct on a widebody with someone else?

For leisure travellers (ie JQs primary market) one-stops will be perfectly acceptable provided they consistently undercut their competitors. The fleet metrics of the A321 combined with the benefits of Australian secondary hubs will make JQ a force to be reckoned with, even with the likes of Air Asia, Scoot and Lion group at our doorstep.

Unlikely they will operate out of Darwin as Qantas are in dispute with owners over their high charges. If Qantas are going to order A321LR better do it very quickly as Airlines will be flocking to Airbus for aircraft to replace cancelled 737max orders

Honolulu on a A321 could be a bit of a stretch. Tokyo and Osaka could be a bit too far too.

Anijak the QF group have huge 100+ A320neo order book so no problems there.

Qantas Group has a large A320 family order outstanding. Around 100 aircraft. The order was first made in 2011 with the order being adjusted and topped up a number of times since then. They can easily adjust which type of aircraft within the A320 family they want at any point prior to Airbus actually starting work a given aircraft.

I thought this was Perth - I haven't heard of any issues with Darwin Airport?

There's no rumor about Jetstar and 321neos.
