Hi folks - I read on a forum (I know, bucket of salt) that Qantas Group is considering moving the Jetstar 787s to Qantas, and then placing an order for A321LR to pick up the 787 routes. I know there would be range issues with most of the 787 routes for Jetstar other than Bali, so it sounds like it could be nonsense, but I'm curious if anyone has inside knowledge / thoughts.

Whether Qantas wants the smaller 787-8, and JQ will need some for Tokyo and Vietnam and possibly Honolulu. QF could make us of A321s though, Adelaide and Canberra to Singapore for starters.

Yes currently there are 14 long haul 787 routes (excluding the charter flights they occasionally do to/from China):

MEL HNL 8,858 km
MEL CGO 8,612 km
SYD HNL 8,154 km
MEL BKK 7,316 km
SYD HKT 7,259 km
OOL NRT 7,209 km
MEL HKT 7,002 km
SYD SGN 6,834 km
MEL SGN 6,683 km
MEL SIN 6,025 km
CNS NRT 5,855 km
CNS KIX 5,787 km
SYD DPS 4,620 km
BNE DPS 4,489 km

The A321 has a max range of 7600km (in a best case scenario) but currently the longest A321 flight is 6243km from Sydney to Manila. Either way they wouldn't be able to operate Phuket (HKT), Honolulu (HNL), Bangkok (BKK), Gold Coast (OOL) to Tokyo (NRT) and any of the Chinese flights (CGO and the charter flights to WUH)

The idea of northern JQ hubs has resurfaced recently. JQ could easily operate A321LR flights from DRW and CNS to all those destinations bar HNL.

Some services, such as DPS and SIN wouldn’t require the stopover and thus could be offered as a non-stop option from the eastern states. BNE/OOL - HNL also has potential, should the A321XLR deliver the appropriate range upgrade. Keep an eye out for the launch announcement (the aircraft, not the route) this year!

The main reason DRW and CNS are unlikely to be used as hubs for connecting from elsewhere in Australia to the list of destinations currently served by 788s is that the current 788 routes are flown in competition with other airlines. Who's going to go one-stop with JQ on a narrowbody A321 when you can go direct on a widebody with someone else?

JQ used to run A320s from DRW to NRT via MNL.

Why would QF want the 787-8s? They have more -9s coming (6 confirmed, another 30 odd options/rights). They have 28 A330s that they recently refit.
The -8s have a shorter range then the -9s (with the JQ -8s reportedly having a shorter then normal range), so QF wouldn't be able to use them for their current or planned 787 routes.

The only thing I could see QF needing the JQ 787-8s for are changes to the HKG and TYO routes, and that's only if they need to redirect the -9s currently going to HKG to new routes (ie, if the AA JV gets approved and they open the planned new routes to ORD, SEA and/or DFW), can't replace those HKG flights with A330s and need to add a flight on SYD-NRT if they need to remove the current 747 on the HND route.

The 788's were orgianlly intended for Qantas actually. The orginal plan was 788 to Jetstar, then 789's when they became available to Jetstar with the 788's to be returned to Qantas for use on domestic routes.

Everything has changed since then of course. But who knows the 788's as domestic A330 replacements might work.

For leisure travellers (ie JQs primary market) one-stops will be perfectly acceptable provided they consistently undercut their competitors. The fleet metrics of the A321 combined with the benefits of Australian secondary hubs will make JQ a force to be reckoned with, even with the likes of Air Asia, Scoot and Lion group at our doorstep.

As I type this, one of the largest Indian airlines (Jet Airways) edges closer to collapse. Should 9W fall, and cause a large airline vacuum in India - a refitted QF spec 788 would be the ideal airframe to service subcontinental destinations from Australia. Low density, high yield configs (say 210 pax, as opposed to JQs 300+) would ensure maximum profitability can be leveraged from some of the largest cities on the planet, currently unserved from major Australian hubs.

Unlikely they will operate out of Darwin as Qantas are in dispute with owners over their high charges. If Qantas are going to order A321LR better do it very quickly as Airlines will be flocking to Airbus for aircraft to replace cancelled 737max orders

Honolulu on a A321 could be a bit of a stretch. Tokyo and Osaka could be a bit too far too.

Qantas Group has a large A320 family order outstanding. Around 100 aircraft. The order was first made in 2011 with the order being adjusted and topped up a number of times since then. They can easily adjust which type of aircraft within the A320 family they want at any point prior to Airbus actually starting work a given aircraft.

I thought this was Perth - I haven't heard of any issues with Darwin Airport?

There's no rumor about Jetstar and 321neos.

They are getting 18 between 2020 and 2022.

Previous disclosures have suggested with will be used on Bali and domestic routes.

I could see some (maybe 5) of their 788s going to QF but not all.
