Anyone have an idea of China Southern's interest to form an alliance with Qantas or Virgin Australia?

They did say they would like an alliance with an Australian Airline in an interview last year, but given Qantas is alligned with China Eastern this would be unlikely.  I would think a relationship with Virgin Blue would be more likely, but I would think there would be a slim chance of this given their relationship with Singapore Airlines.

Could see a Virgin alliance but only on China routes.

With Singapore and Etihad already battling over Europe and sharehoding cant see a full alliance...

It also starts hitting into China politics giving an advantage over Air China -- all three are state owned

I'm not sure Virgin have any reason to partner with China Southern -- given they only fly to Guangzhou from Australia, surely it means they're no easier to fly to other major Chinese cities than it would be with Singapore Airlines...

Not sure if it is practical but I'd like them to partner up with Hainan Airlines.

Actually, an alliance with QF will be viable. The China Eastern agreement is focused on cities around Shanghai and to the North of Shanghai, Southern China via Shanghai invloves significant backtracking similar to the BA situation at LHR. It will make sense for QF to partner up with China Southern given CX's unwillingness to cooperate with QF.
