Did a booking yesterday for partner and me. Entered her name as Cath rather than Catherine as appears on Passport and FF card. It is a domestic flight only – Bris-Melbourne – but thought would ask Qantas this morning if could be done simply. They didnt indicate whether needed to be done but said couldn't be done for free as it was A RedE Deal fare so wanted to change to flex fare and expect me to pay difference in fares plus $99 change fee and $45 service fee! I declined. Wont need to show passport but as did book exit row seats wont be able to check in online. Will there be any issue at check in at airport?

I have only ever had an ID check made at a regional airport when checking in; never at a major airport. I also have a first name that can be shortened and have had bookings made for me with my shortened first name, my full first name and my first and middle name joined.

Has the booking been linked to her FF account? Qantas should do that for free on the phone if it doesn't link online or if you didn't enter the number when you booked.

There will be no issue with that shortened first name.

Thanks. Entered FF at booking time . I would not have been concerned at all until after “talking” to Qantas Online help they said I could not change name and etc as stated. You would hope, perhaps forlornly, that there and then she would have simply said that “Cath” will be fine but do realise they always try and gouge you for extra money ands hence went down that path

After 5 different “operators” over 10 hrs of open chat message the last one simply said “yep can fix that” and it was changed within 5 mins. Lesson learnt anyway and all good now
