So, I got a nice surprise when I checked on an upcoming flight in my VA app this evening... Despite having only 987 status credits, I've been bumped up to Platinum prematurely.
Has this happened to anyone else?
I'm obviously thrilled, but curious too – is this sort of decision made by a human who checks and thinks “yeah, close enough” or is it an automated process? If the latter, what's the threshold for an early upgrade? Does it take into account my future bookings?
My wife is on about 1,600 status credits but is stuck on gold due to insufficient sectors. She'll tick the sectors off this weekend and then as soon as she gets to platinum she'll also be able to gift gold to one of the kids.
Got bumped up at 983. Email suggested they knew I fell short officially but did it anyway as I was close. If I had received the status credits as quickly as last ones were removed i.e. within a day or two, I would have cracked 1100. Maybe they recognised this. Either way, as first time to plat, I'm chuffed.
Yes, a couple of years ago I found myself around 32 short of keeping Gold, but had overseas flights 8 weeks after the review date adding over 400 SCs. I didn't want to travel on Silver, made a call and they willingly rolled over Gold (letting me then hit Platinum after returning to AUS).
Wish Qantas would do the same. Have been platinum for years, and for the first time was close to P1, asked the question and was told 'nope', even though I had flights booked under the double status credits london to singapore return, which would have pushed me over, but had to cancel due to Covid-19. ho hum

It's definitely been reported to happen before. I've personally been bumped early to VA Gold the first time I was qualifying for it.
However, I'm not sure about the processes behind it, whether it's automated or not.
