We had booked ~20k worth of fares to the US for this Christmas at the start of the year. There is zero chance of that happening, but Qantas have not cancelled the flights and we are told if we were do do anything it would be a 'change of mind' cancellation by us.

At the very least this is highly unethical. Qantas will not be flying. The only logical assumption is Qantas are doing it to hold onto our cash. Is there any event that is likely to force their hand? Can I expect this to change 3 months out, or will I be waiting till the week before?

I suspect it will be between 1-3 months but agree very unethical as it has been announced they won’t fly to mid year. It is all about cash flow i.e limiting outgoings when no cash coming in.

Just hang on in there - will likely get cancelled 1 -2 months prior at which point you'll be able to request a refund
