The first one to join and earn points on is Aegean, as this can get you Gold status much faster than any other Star Alliance member. See http://www.ausbt.com.au/how-to-get-star-alliance-gold-vip-status-with-just-one-flight for details.

If it helps, you need to fly very frequently and preferably on Thai airways.
Thai Airways Royal orchid plus. From personal experience you have to earn 50,000 miles each year just to attain gold status. On top of all the Gold status perks i.e luggage and lougue access there is a bi-annual complimentary gold upgrade and this years there is a special of 50% less miles reqired on thai flight rewards on whatever class.
If you are a serious flyer then if you fly 80000 miles you may be invited to join their platinum card with unlimited complimentary upgrades applicable to all award nomiees and yourself of course.
Otherwise join Aegean Airlines Miles and Bonus. They have a great range of flights to and from greece at low reward rates and comparitivley low star alliance reward rates aswell asreasonablt high earning rates for business star alliance tickets.
