What is the best use of Velocity points, for someone how has roughly 300k points and is moving permanently to the UK in August? Is there a business upgrade option, or some velocity partner retailer that has a good point-to-spend ratio?

You can certainly redeem points on Velocity Airline partners, such as Etihad and Delta.
There's also a business class upgrade if you're flying on Virgin Australia via Abu Dhabi.

The business class upgrade on VA from Syd-Auh is great, it costs 45,000 points per sector, but is only available for the Virgin Aus component of the flight, not for the Auh-UK sector. So if you are relocationg, you could upgrade on the way over, but just the Syd-Auh flight. I think you might be able to claim a whole flight across using points, so it might be worth your while trying to book a one way flight to the UK in business class to use up some of your points.

How do you go about requesting an upgrade on the Syd-Auh leg? The VA website states that flight upgrades are only available on domestic and international short haul. Is this no longer accurate?
