Etihad rolls out free Wifi for messaging, unlimited data for a fee
Whether a quick chat or extended browsing session, the Abu Dhabi-based airline has you covered.
There are two kinds of travellers: those who enjoy switching off devices for the duration of their flight (pesky notifications, be gone), and those who can’t resist browsing or scrolling their social feed. Etihad's newly-overhauled Wifi offering satisfies both.
The Gulf carrier has today debuted two fresh Wi-Fly packages – one tailor-made for chatting on messaging apps including WhatsApp and WeChat, and the other unlocking unlimited Internet.
Available now on the airline’s twin aisle jets, pricing for the ‘Chat’ and ‘Surf’ packages is based on the length of the flight. However, if you’re signed up to the Etihad Guest loyalty program, you can use Chat for free – similar to Emirates' Wifi offering for its own Skywards members.
Etihad's single aisle fleet is not included within the change, with those aircraft sticking with the current mobile connectivity service, which allows passengers to make and receive calls as well as send text messages and use data roaming.
Pricing for Etihad's new inflight Wifi packages are as follows:
- For flights under 7 hours, the Chat package is US$2.99 (AUD$4.45) or free for Etihad Guest members, and the Surf package is US$9.99 (AUD$14.90).
- For flights over 7 hours, the Chat package is US$4.99 (AUD$7.45) or also free for Etihad Guest members, and the Surf package is US$19.99 (AUD$29.80).
For comparison, pricing for both packages is relatively on par with Emirates, which offers chat for USD$2.99 to $5.99 for non-Skywards members, and surfing for between US$9.99 and $19.99. Qatar Airways allows one hour complimentary for Privilege Club members, or US$10 for the duration of the flight.
Those cocooned in luxury in one of Etihad's lavish first class suites, as well as those with Guest Platinum or Exclusive VIP tier, can access Surf package for free.
Sadly business class guests are not included gratis, with the standard fees applicable. If you happen to hold an Etihad Guest Gold card, you’ll receive a handy 25% discount.
In other recent news, Etihad has revealed its well-appointed A380 superjumbo will at last be returning to the skies from July 15, beginning between Abu Dhabi and London’s Heathrow.
