Premium economy is enjoying growing popularity in international travel, offering some of the benefits and advantages of the more expensive cabins but at a more reasonable price.
British Airways’ World Traveller Plus – which sits between the World Traveller (economy) and Club World (business) classes – improves the economy experience with larger, more comfortable seats; fewer seats in the cabin so that you get more personalised service; additional amenities; and a wider selection of dining and beverage options, making it a compelling option for your next flight.
Before the flight
When it comes to baggage, World Traveller Plus offers a much larger allowance than the standard economy seats. You’re able to bring a full-sized cabin bag, as well as a laptop bag or handbag on board the aircraft.
You also get up to two pieces of checked baggage in the hold, and each can be up to 23kg, for a total of 46kg of luggage – around double what you’d typically get for an economy World Traveller seat, and not far off what you’d be able to bring on board in Business Class.
The seat
BA's World Traveller Plus seat is naturally larger and roomier than its economy counterpart, and comes with extra legroom as well.
The seat pitch, or the distance between seat rows, is 38 inches on World Traveller Plus, compared to 31 inches on most of British Airways' standard World Traveller economy seats.
The World Traveller Plus seat is slightly wider and also reclines further, too.
All of these improvements combined mean that you have a seat that’s got more legroom, more space and more recline than a regular World Traveller economy seat, which all helps make for a much more comfortable flight.
British Airways' daily Boeing 777-300ER service from Sydney to London via Singapore features the airline's latest World Traveller Plus cabin.
Each passenger has a 10.6 inch personal video screen size, as well as in-seat power – that's very handy if you’ve got work to get through during the flight.
Once you’ve boarded, you’ll receive an amenity kit including a toothbrush, toothpaste, eye mask and flight socks, as well as a blanket and cushion.
Additionally, noise-cancelling headphones are provided to World Traveller Plus customers, so you can have a quieter, more relaxed experience on board.
Dining
World Traveller Plus offers a more robust dining experience on long-haul flights, including three-course meals, fine china dinnerware and linen napkins.
The main course is a selection from the business class menu, so you’ll definitely taste the difference compared to a standard economy seat.
You also receive a printed menu card outlining the options for the main course – a nice touch along with the upgraded dinnerware to provide a more premium dining experience.
A typical menu in World Traveller Plus features a salad for the starter, a choice of two substantial mains and a dessert to finish off. There’s also full bar service available.
Summary
British Airways World Traveller Plus can be enticing for those looking for a more premium experience than economy but without the cost of business class.
It’s especially welcome for day flights where you wouldn’t be sleeping, and the additional seat size and amenities mean that you can have a comfortable experience without shelling out on the full business class experience.
The addition of power outlets for your devices and the extra room also makes it a much more convenient option than economy for getting some work done while in the air.
