Virgin America is giving away up to 7,500 free Elevate points as a sign-up bonus for new members to its frequent flyer program, and up to 15,000 miles split 50/50 between existing and new members for referrals.

The clever campaign suggests that loyalty to another airline can leave you 'trapped in a dysfunctional relationship' where you give a lot more than you get and put up with a lot more than you should.

To get frequent flyers out of that reward rut, Virgin America is offering up to 7,500 points in its Elevate scheme when new members take their first flight by December 31st, 2014.

Take that first flight in Virgin America's Main Cabin economy class and you'll score 2,500 Elevate miles.

Book into the Main Cabin Select premium economy cabin and your tally doubles to 5,000 points, while First Class hoovers up the full load of 7,500 points.

There's also a first-up freebie of 500 bonus points when you join Elevate.

Already an Elevate member? Recommend that a friend (or even a total stranger) join Elevate and you'll both pick up the same serve of free Elevate points when that person takes his or her first Virgin America flight.

If you're new to the scheme, feel free to use our own referral link to claim your free Elevate points.

It's a good deal if you regularly travel within the USA, so head over to Virgin America's LoyaltyMademeDoIt.com website and get cracking.

Thanks David! I have 6 friends travelling on VX for the first time in Dec, does that mean I'll stand to earn 15,000 Elevate miles as a referrer (6 x 2500 miles)? That's enough miles to redeem for LHR-LAX (VS) or SYD-SIN (SQ).

Hi enojet

Its a fair ammount of points but not enough to get you to singapore

You need 20,000 to get to SIN on SQ or 24,000 to get to SIN on EK
