I am flying MEL - LHR in premium economy with my partner in early August. We are both platinum / gold frequent flyers with QF.
Our original itinerary was MEL to SIN on QF37 on a 787, then connecting onto QF1. QF37 has subsequently been downgraded to an A330. We have upgrade requests in for both legs.
I am now wondering whether to keep this itinerary, or ask to switch to QF9 to ensure we get PE the whole way. There are merits to both: the original itinerary leaves later in the day and the larger A380 cabin may increase our upgrade chances. However, switching to QF9 would at least ensure we can fly PE the whole way if the upgrades fall through.
Curious to know which one you would choose if in my situation.
Hi 70D. Do you know what the general situation is regarding upgrade requests? My impression is that due to high demand, and the increased willingness of pax to stump up cash for premium cabin fares, it hasn't been great for pax looking to upgrade to J on points.
Would really love to hear from other fliers about their recent experiences so we can gauge what the chances (at least are in the short term...)
Regardless, I hope you score your upgrades.

Yeah that's a fair point about the general lack of premium seats at the moment. All the more reason to want to maximise my chances! !
I couldn't comment on current success of international upgrade requests, but it seems to me (my opinion only) that it would be a higher likelihood of success on QF1 rather than 9. If it was me I'd be going for 1. 9 is always full and very popular... EDIT. That is if you are keen on the upgrade. Fully agree otherwise that 9 at least guarantees you PE all the way and is a great route to fly.
Could I suggest that you fly Melbourne to Sydney and connect to QF1 - that way you have premium economy the whole way (basically) AND you then have a chance of an upgrade with 70 seats vs 42 or so on the 787. Plus the Sydney F lounge...

Almost every day there are 5+ empty J class seats available on say BNE-LAX QF flight for even same day departure.
Would these seats get sold at the airport, or does it mean upgrades are more common when airfares go too much north, and seats don’t get sold??

Best-ish of both worlds?
