Does anyone have more information on whether Qantas will follow the likes of JetBlue, Delta and Air Canada and fit seatback IFE screens onboard its new A220 fleet?
I prefer airlines provide fast reliable WiFi so I can bring my own IFE device. I'd be amazed if anybody on an airplane did not have a iPhone, iPad, laptop, or some other electronic device. The weight saving by not having an airline provided IFE system can lead to a lower fuel bill, which can lead to a lower environmental footprint, and lower airfares. The added benefit is that people can watch what they want, and not leave it to the airline concerned to decide what passengers will watch.
If they can do similar to Virgin offers on the 737's by allowing one to plug a phone into the unit and get their entertainment that way It would well work but one thing that would help is offering up to the minute programming.I flew VA Adelaide to Sydney both ways a year ago and there's only so many fuller house or two broke girls episodes you can get through from the minute you can use their app for the inflight audio up to just before landing. That was one hour 45 over and 2 hours 10 home.some up to the minute programs would go a long way as well and maybe the return of music.
Has anyone got updates on this? Surely with the aircraft doing rounds now someone would've had a chance to peek inside? Unless they're being held under a non-disclosure agreement?
It might be a similar case to the 737 fleet. The newer 737s all have seat back IFE because they are also used on international flights to NZ, the Pacific and Bali as well as domestic flights.
If Qantas plans to operate A220s on shorter international routes out of Perth and Brisbane then we may see some of the fleet installed with TVs.
But would it really matter on a short hop from Canberra to Melbourne or Hobart?
Part of the reason why we haven't seen the Qantas A220 interior is that the economy seats apparently don't have their padding installed due to a certification issue.
In regards to the IFE, I think they should have it installed as they market themselves as a premium airline, and since the A220s will be doing longer routes, I think IFE should be installed. Plus even if they have free Wi-Fi, I still quite often like to watch something as I'm browsing and I also like the bigger screen of the IFE as a lot of people might just have their phones to view, which is less than ideal.

Do I expect seat back IFE? Yes. Do I expect Qantas will provide seat back IFE on their A220? No.

Not a chance, too much extra weight. Maybe an outside chance of business only.

Well we have our answer and as expected Qantas opted for mediocrity.
