Yes. The plane in fact is the exact same 747-400ER you will be traveling from if you are on QF 107 SYD to LAX. If you are on QF 107 you will need to clear customs and immigrations, pick your bags up, check in (I think?) and then go back to the same plane.

Once clearing customs you need to drop your bags at the transfer area located to the right of the exit of the customs hall (follow the signs) if your bag has been tagged through to your final destination. Then processed through security then to your gate. Not all planes are the refurbished type. I have travelled on that flight in the last year and the return flight was on an unrefurbished plane.

Thanks for that! I got a bit worried because originally when i booked, the seat map showed the refurbished 747 with 3 rows in the nose, and 5 rows upstairs,... but then a recheck of the seat map yesterday showed the seat map changed to 4 rows in the nose, followed by 2 rows (row 23 and 24) behind the bulkhead with 6 rows upstairs.... thought this was an old 747..

Whilst QF does designate some routes as being 'refurbished routes', aircraft are always subject to change and sometimes at the last minute.
The only exception is SYD-DFW-BNE-SYD which is always refurbished as it can only be operated by a 747-400ER, all other 747 routes on the Qantas network can be operated by 747-400 aircraft where only three have been refurbished.
Hope this helps.

I would never say never whilst QF still has a handful of planes that havent been refurbished. The refurbished 9 and still have 15-16 in service. If you look at theqantasscource.com 3-4 flights in June were on the older 3 class 747 and even 1 was on the old 4 class 747!
So no I do not believe there is any garuntee

All flights between LAX and JFK are now 747, however they are not all are refurbished.
I flew back JFK-LAX-SYD in late March this year, and the business class still had the first generation Sky Bed (i.e. angled lie flat) and a less comprehensive in-flight entertainment system than on the flight over to the US.
From what I understand, the vast majority are refurbished, however, (unfortunately and very frustratingly) an old one can still pop up every now and then.
