Earlier this week I completed a survey through Red Planet Research (affiliated with Qantas) that asked about attitudes to frequent flyer programs. In particular, it seemed to be focused on gauging attitudes to a revenue based frequent flyer program (ie, your status is linked to how much you spend) versus a frequent flyer program based on how much your fly (ie, Qantas' current program where you earn status based on distance and fare type). I didn't take note of who commissioned the research, but I finished the survey thinking it might be Qantas testing the waters for a future shift to a revenue based program. Some of the questions even asked attitudes to earning status on everyday spend (ie, no or limited flying involved). Does anyone have thoughts on this?
Not a surprise to see Qantas getting this out to gauge reaction from their FFs to Virgin’s revenue based scheme changes. Same happened when Virgin announced that they were looking to allow small dogs on flights and I received a survey on that exact subject within days from Qantas.
I am sure both Qantas and VA look constantly at what each other is doing in the market, ready to hit the go button or sit and wait for consumer reaction, whether to join or run away from the latest idea to increase revenue. Remembering its all about revenue, never about us!

The earn rate is irrelevant, the usage of Qantas point is the problem.
