Hi team,

Firstly happy new year to everyone. Quick question. I nabbed a Sydney to Dxb flight via Doha in first class with Virgin Australia points. I’m both a va plat & qf plat. I’m keen to get to use the Qantas f lounge in Sydney for a few hours before the flight and not have to wait the 3 hours for the check in to open. I have to connect in from Melbourne and I wanted to check would either Virgin or Qantas allow me to purchase a flight and check me through to my final destination. I’m unsure is it best to try with the OW route or Virgin with the reward ticket route.

Lastly prior to travel would people recommend to update the flight on Qatar website with my qf number so I can access the lounge?

Thanks all,

LTF

As you booked with points you'd have the QR flight number, so just walk up to QF F-lounge in Sydney and show the QF membership and they'll accept it.

For the checkin ... I don't think QR online checkin gives you the boarding passes, or does it? I don't recall. But can't answer that. I'd doubt that either QF or VA would fully check you through with 2 different bookings.

What I can say - during QR online checkin you can override the frequent flyer program number to QF if you want, even with a VA points booking. I did the same ~8 months ago to have my QR-ID platinum on the boarding pass to access Al Safwa in Doha. If you add QF then F-lounge entry will be easier but it should still work to show your QF card.

QF will allow you to through check onto a separate booking because one of the bookings was made with points.

Book a QF revenue or reward ticket, and ask the QF agent to add the connecting flight. If they state it’s not possible, let them know the QR booking is a redemption so can be linked. This will permit through checking of bags, allow you to collect a boarding pass, and access the lounge earlier.

If the main ticket is points, then the domestic leg will need to be revenue, or vice versa, this rule was built as its impossible to use points for one leg and money for another, also QF may not join the separate bookings together if VA points were used. Only if QF, EK or Oneworld points were used. Generally QF check the ticket to see how ticket was purchased. VA redemption may not been seen as a Oneworld and therefore benefit not applied.

IMHO QF First in Sydney severely overrated - I personally cannot put it on the same plank with The Pier Business in HKG. So IMHO does not matter, really and even if you will be denied QF First entry there are plenty of good lounges in Sydney airport.

Saying that I believe that it you hold First ticket for Qatar you will be allowed to came in. It is does not matter how you get your ticket.
