Just went to book a flight from Melbourne to the Gold Coast on November 23rd and it turns out QF1193 on a QF 737-800 is now an option. Gave QF a ring, apparently the flight will only run on Saturdays. I don't know why it hasn't been announced yet...?
It's a one-off, likely related to an ex-Gold Coast charter. The schedules are showing a single MEL-OOL flight on the 23rd, then a single OOL-MEL flight a week later on the 30th. I can't see any other flights scheduled at this point.
According to Qantas, these are a one-off services to deal with high levels of demand during "Schoolies' Week" ( hence the unusual four-digit flight number, which is typical found only on codeshare flights, despite this being a Qantas operated service).
Why would you want to fly direct when you can go via Sydney for the same price and enjoy double minimum miles/status credits/tier points?
And if you're in economy and have access to the lounge you can avoid the inflight "meal" and have something a bit more substantial in the lounge en route.

Well I can't work it out either, especially as the QF phone service man said it was a new service. Bizarre.

Strange, there's no Red e-Deal availability (and no Classic Award either).

I am sure that is what's on schoolies minds.

Surely the schoolies are interested in the cheapest charter possible in order to maximise money for entertainment purposes?
