I'm surprised they let you in! They changed the rule earlier this year to say only AA marketed flights.
Select Qantas Clubs when departing on the same day on an American Airlines operated flight or an American marketed flight operated by Qantas

Hmm I had an AA boarding pass since I was checked in to the Sydney flight by AA in Miami, so maybe that did the trick!

So were you on QF numbered flights? Or were they both AA numbered flights regardless of operator?

QF for the cross-Pacific legs, AA for the rest. Flight purchased through Qantas
