Well done to Qantas for being the World's safest airline again! As an aside, there were 21 fatal crash's in 2014 (a record low) from 27 million flights. So the odds of being involved in a fatal crash are less than 1:1,000,000.

How exactly does one determine the world's safest airline out of several hundred that didn't crash this year?

Air New Zealand had a plane crash over Antartica in the 70s or 80s killing all onboard the sight seeing flight.the pilot was trying to give passengers a better view and flew into the mountain.

QF1 was a long time ago really. The training and processes would be different now. If you read The Aviation Herald (avherald.com) it becomes obvious that the media beat up of Qantas incidents is just crap. Comparatively they have a low rate of incidents. Also, with the possible exception of QF1, all of those incidences listed above were evidence of the outstanding training Qantas pilots receive.
QF32 was not an oversized fan disk at all, it was an incorrectly manufactured feed pipe and Rolls Royce settled with Qantas for hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation. The pilot’s actions were praised in the ATSB report. QF72 is an airbus issue and QF30 is just one of those random events.
The ratings website has this to say about its results ‘AirlineRatings.com’s rating system takes into account a range of factors related to audits from aviation’s governing bodies such as the FAA and ICAO as well as government audits and the airline’s fatality record.’
I’m not saying Qantas is perfect but I’m just really over the out of proportion crap Qantas gets from the Australian media that leads to a completely false set of ideas about it. Rant over… Sorry

There's a reason for the constant drip-drip-drip of "QF maintenance sucks" stories in the media, and it has everything to do with a long game being played by union officials who have journalists on speed dial.

Im aware of the Mt Erebus crash Merc 25 so Im assuming this is based on any airline who has not had a crash during their entire existance?
